Environmental Assessment Methodology

How Toucan Protocol estimates the network-attributed environmental footprint of Solana wallet activity and transactions.

Fundamental Attribution Principle

Toucan Protocol does not physically measure the power drawn by an end-user's phone or computer. Instead, it assesses the network-attributed impact—the proportional share of the entire Solana validator network's electrical power and carbon footprint required to validate, execute, and store your transactions.

Calculation Formulas

1. Estimated Network Energy
Energy (Wh) = Transactions × 0.00792 Wh

Each finalized Solana transaction requires approximately 0.00792 Watt-hours of network electrical consumption across all cluster validators.

2. Estimated Network Carbon
Carbon (gCO₂e) = Transactions × 0.00251 gCO₂e

Network carbon intensity accounts for the global geographical distribution and grid emissions factors of Solana validator hardware.

Configuration Constants

Revision: 2026-09-07

All constants are centralized in /lib/climate-config.ts so they can be versioned transparently as Solana's validator efficiency improves over time.

Human-Understandable Equivalence Models

Raw Watt-hours and grams of carbon can be abstract. We normalize these numbers against audited everyday mechanical and electrical equivalents:

Limitations & Scope

  • Network Average vs. Individual Complexity: Calculation utilizes network average transaction metrics. High-compute transactions and simple SOL transfers are evaluated against the cluster average.
  • Not a Carbon Offset or Certification: Toucan Protocol makes zero certification claims. Generating a receipt does not imply carbon neutral status or the retirement of certified voluntary carbon credits.
  • Scan Caps: To protect public zero-cost infrastructure, wallet scanning is capped at 10,000 transactions (50,000 for deep scans).
